I've always been a pen and paper kind of gal. Packing lists, and to do lists, shopping lists, paper calendars, journals... all of it. I grew up with my mom using one of those giant monthly wall calendars in the kitchen, as well as a daily list of what needed to happen, written out each morning on a fresh piece of notebook paper. So it was a natural progression for me to continue this paper planning into my own life. And as my life became more complicated with business and kids and partner, I’ve gravitated towards using a bullet journal. For those of you who don't know, let’s start with separating out the fact that bullet journaling is originally a specific method developed by Ryder Carroll, and not a specific kind of physical journal. Which is what I originally thought. I thought that bullet journals were notebooks with dot grid "bullets" instead of lines. Nope. they are two completely separate things. They just happen to coexist quite often. Probably because they both lend themselves very well to customization and flexibility. Which is part of why I love my bullet journal so much. Another thing I love about my current journaling technique is that I can skip it. There have been entire months (for example when I was pregnant and feeling ill) that I decided to just skip doing any sort of layout because it felt too overwhelming and I felt like I was just surviving each day. And that’s perfectly OK! When I was ready to come back, my journal was right there and I could just open up to the next blank page and I was good to go. I didn’t have to worry about wasting a whole bunch of pages because their specific dates had passed. I’m a very visual person, so I also love the artistic freedom of bullet journaling. But I realize that not everybody has the time or desire to be as artistic in their planning. And sometimes that person who doesn’t have the time is me. This is how I ended up digitizing some of my spreads in order to reuse them myself when I’m in a time crunch. From there, it was an easy jump to start offering them to other people as well. I opened a second Etsy shop called Cloud Paper Printables. I initially thought that keeping them separate would be the best plan. But over the years, the two have become more and more meshed in my head and in my life. I've always made sketches of what my sewing projects will look like, but I also make diagrams with measurements and the shapes of the pattern pieces. I’ll even draw out diagrams of the seam options if there’s a tricky part that I’m trying to figure out in my head. For years, my sewing sketches were completely separate from my planner. But with bullet journalling, it felt natural to combine the two so that everything is in one place. Especially since I use dot grid notebooks. It’s easy to write and draw and straight lines but the dots are also not distracting if you want to completely ignore them. This comes in handy when you want to draw instead of write in your planner. Perfect for sewing ideas. Long story short, the time has come to just combine both my love of sewing and my love of artistic planning. I now have them both on my Goheen Designs website. After all, they're still designs made by me. Basically, for those of you who are sewists, this post was little explanation for why there’s suddenly more varied content on my social media, my blog, and on my YouTube channel. Long story short I have a lot of hobbies and don’t be surprised if even more of them show up in my business.
